East of the Barrow-Downs, lies Bree-land, "a small country of fields and tamed woodlands only a few miles broad." Bree-land has four villages: Bree, Staddle, Combe and Archet. The settlements are clustered around the slopes of Bree-hill - Bree on the west, under the frowning hill-brow; Staddle on the gentler southeastern slopes; Combe in a valley on the eastern flanks; and Archet in the Chetwood north of Combe.

Bree itself is a smallish settlement of Men and Hobbits located at the ancient meeting place of the Great East Road and the old North Road (now overgrown and generally called the "Greenway"). It is surrounded by a deep trench with a tall hedge on the innermost side. Three stout wooden gates guard the entrances to Bree.

Play will start in the Prancing Pony Inn in Bree, the establishment of Barliman Butterbur, who has recently taken over the management of the Inn from his ailing father. The Pony is a three-story timber and stone structure, with two wings enclosing a courtyard where the stables are located. The large common room has served as a meeting place for travelers for several generations, and if "News from Bree" is heard in the Shire, it no doubt originated in this room.
